Aiight so Boom. Picture it, 2017. The year of the "Thick girl". The curvy body is being prized, desired and envied more than ever. Ashley graham has been on sports illustrated; the body positivity movement has taken off; we have Fashion Nova Curve, and shoot, even slim girls are beefing up in hopes of being every Fetty Waps dream (slim thick witcho cute ahh..).
So, Big Girls are on top right? We've gained body equality in the industry right?
Big or small, the current trend leans towards the extreme hour glass shape. While some retailers have stayed away from this (Like wally world, jcP, Target), your spots like Fashion Nova Curve, Forever 21+, Charlotte Ruse+, have a penchant for showcasing this hour glass figure in their models while neglecting the other body types. Not to shame the lovely young women who have been blessed with this body type (because their is no shame), but some of us were blessed with no hips, lil boobies, and like me, big round bellies that will never fit into an hourglass - more appropriately a tire swing .
If your like me, every now and then you would love to different shapes of models to help you get a more accurate view of how the clothing with look on you. And while, at this time LushDivas' Boutique can't really compete with these big name stores (YET)... I can STILL give you some tips to enhance your big, beautiful belly.
1. Wear Clothes that Fit/ Invest in tailoring
Now, this may seem a little obvious and condescending, but it must be said. There is NOTHING that will ruin an outfit faster than ill-fitting fashions. Now, wearing clothes that "fit" does not mean that every big bellied girl needs to walk around in tent-like items. "Fit" simple means that the fabric of your clothes lays or flows with ease on your body without bunching, tugging, riding up, sliding down, pinching or cutting. This is not about your clothing being "too big" or "too small" , "tight" or "loose". (because I love a form fitting outfit) This is about, (and any fashionista will agree) your clothes laying well on your body so that you can show them off! Me personally, I don't want anything taking away from my "look" and ill-fitting clothes will do that in an instant!
For your staple items (dress pants, blazers, dress shirts), an investment in tailoring can make an affordable off-the-rack item, a custom piece in just $10-15 dollars. In order to get the right fit in pants, consider purchasing a size up to get a nice smooth fit on your waist, and having the legs tailored in. Even some dress shirts can be taken out to prevent pulling in the belly area. Give your local tailor a try! Start off with a lower priced item that you can live without while your trying new tailors of course!
Now this tip is not just for ladies for big bellies. Its for all ladies. The clothes that you wear under your clothes, if chosen correctly, can drastically enhance (or ruin if chosen incorrectly) a strong outfit! I like shape-wear. I always have, always will. I like full on body briefers (one piece shape wear), compression garments, corsets, alla dat! BUT, as a pretty active teacher, none of these are practical to wear every single day. What I suggest to you is to first, research, try on, and invest in high-end shape-wear that you can wear under formal wear, or when you just need to look extra SNATCHED. And secondly, try different options for daily "shape-wear"/underclothes. Typically I wear a cami (cotton stretch from wally world - see below)that smooths out my belly wrinkles and keeps my shirts from riding up. I also wear high waisted microfiber stretch brief underwear that come up to my belly button. This typically does the trick to create a smooth base under my outfits.. Whatever it is you decide to to wear under your clothes, make sure it lends to better fitting clothes (remember no bunching tugging riding sliding pinching or cutting)
