Well..... There it is...,
Good ol' Towns beauty supply. I've been terrorizing this place since freshman year, (2010). Back when I used to trap out the dorm room doing sew-ins and crochet braids. I pretty much visited this place daily. I came here so much so that the owner gave me a lifetime discount. While I don't come here nearly as often, I still make my bi-weekly trip to towns to stock up on my usuals. Lashes, Liner and Lipstick.
If we're being honest, its safe to say that not all beauty products are created equal (and I URGE you to be careful with what you put on your skin) BUT, some ARE created equal And this is why I still mosey on down to the towns to purchase certain staples that are effective, safe, and affordable. Keep reading to find out what are my go-to BSS staples. (This blog might even save you a few coins)
First things First,
😍 Hair aids - Combs, brushes, rollers, hair ties, rubber bands, bows, scarves etc. As long as your not trying to eat these items, they will be safe and effect to use !
😍 Lashes - Lashes are made out of 1/2 things. Plastic, or Hair. Plastic lashes are typically the cheapest, are very stiff and look shiny in the pack. Human hair lashes tend to be fairly flexible and are not shiny. Past that, you'll never really know WHAT kind of hair it is on those lashes. Trust that they wash and treat their hair, and keep it pushing. I've used the cheapest of the cheap lashes to mink lashes and I've never had any type of negative eye issues. Keep reading below to find out the best BSS brand lashes (yes better than ardell)
😍 Fashion Jewelry/Earrings - Need something for 1 special night out or a quick weekend at the beach? The beauty supply store typically has a large selection of fashion jewelry under $5. Don't expect to pass these pieces on as family heirlooms, but you can stunt for a couple days. I've picked up some wooden jewelry from there that actually have had for years!
😍 Eyeliner - I can use an entire automatic eyeliner in 1 week. Same with lip-liner. I use them undoubtedly with every make-up look. No need to spend $10 replacing fancy liners that your going to eat off anyway, So my bi-weekly trip to towns always includes picking up my 3 liners (jet black, dark brown and nude). Ruby Kisses is my trusted brand and I can only find it at the BSS. AND its only 99 cents! Spending less on my everyday staples makes it easier to splurge on fancy specialty products.
Try and see
🤔 . Hair products (Non-Chemical) - Be careful here and read reviews. Many overseas countries do not hold their company's to chemical testing, or have certain harmful substances banned. Just be careful. I swear by an off-brand "WEN" I found at the BSS, but its always trial and error for me with new products. Also, reading the ingredient list is a must!
🤔 Makeup - I personally have not tried unbranded foundation from the BSS for the same reasons I don't use skin-care products from the BSS. You just cant be sure. However, I do love trying new lipstick colors, blushes and eyeshadows from towns. At the end of the day, even if the product doesn't work well, you get a chance to see if you like the colors and if you wan't to invest in a similar product from a better brand. This especially comes in handy with lipsticks and eyeshadows. Try the $1 bss brand first, before going Anastasia beverly hills on us! Keep reading below to see my favorite BSS lipstick brands.
🤔 Salon Products - The BSS caters a lot to professionals, so of course they will offer a variety of salon products that they generally will sell to the public. The only reason this goes in the "Try and see" list is because you should really only use professional salon products that your stylist suggest. Salon quality products cost more because their better (and they sometimes contain chemicals that only stylist should work with). You don't want to go around flinging extra money "testing" salon products. If your stylist uses Mizhani and suggest you use their shampoo system, the BSS is a good way to purchase these products and save some cash since they have them in bulk! But if you don't know anything about the brand, consult with your stylist first.
😱 Skin-care products - The same reasons that make the BSS a good place to pick up wholesale goods are the same reasons why you should avoid buying un branded skin-care products from the bss. Many of these products are made in factories overseas where standards for ingredients or processing may be much more lax then here in the US. This means that if you pick up an unbranded.99$ charcoal mask, you may be getting other harmful chemicals mixed in as well. Stick with tried and trusted brands that you know.
😱 Clothing & accessories - BSS generally don't specialize in fashion. They carry beauty products. So you MAY find an abstract pair of leggings or a printed purse in the BSS that you can't find anywhere else, but chances are its priced higher than necessary (due to low quantity stock) and or its not well made. If you looking for cheap in style accessories, try big name stores like Walmart that can offer lower prices due to higher stock .
😱 Salon tools (professional) -
Some BSS stores offer brand name salon tools, but most that I have visited do not. If your on an overnight trip and forgot your flat iron, the BSS is a great place to pick one up for 7.99. Don't expect her to get very hot or last for very long. Now, you can find a high-priced hot tools at the BSS, BUT I have not found any one collection to be consistent enough to say that I would buy hot tools from there. I am more likely to hit up target to grab something by con-air, or use a coupon and go to ulta for the best brands.
Ruby Kisses Eyeliner/ LipLiner
Although this eyeliner is just a dollar, its definitely a step up from some other budget brands (wet n wild/ nicka k, etc). This is what I use religiously to fill in my eyebrows (I just cant afford that darn dipbrow!). The formula is very smooth and creamy for an automatic pencil, and they have like 7 shades of Black to brown so i can switch up the color based on what wig i'm rocking that day lol
LA Girls Pro Concealer
If you didn't know, I'm here to tell you. The black beauty supply stores MADE LA GIRLS. La girls was almost exclusively a budget brand you found only in beauty supply stores. I always knew them to have cheap foundations and lipsticks. It wasn't until they came out with the pro-conceal and us lil ol' BSS enthusiasts started catching on, did they catch the attention of bigger name stores. Now you can find LA girls pro conceal at Ulta and other beauty stores, however if you want to see ALLLLLL the colors in person (including the the corrector shades) your local BSS is your best bet. (or you can click the photo and purchase directly from L.A. girls at retail price)
Girllll Yes! These lashes are 1.99 and are hands down the best lashes I've ever put on my face. They are soft and full and they have thin flexible bands. The wearability of these lashes is amazing! I can wear a pair of these lashes for a week straight! Any time I have on lashes, it is this brand. My favorite styles are 43 (everday) , 102 (giant/drama/thick), 523 (classic/1960s), Wispies (everyday Long & spidery). Click the photo to check out these lashes which are on sale @ samsbeauty for 1.00
Absolute New York Lipstick
I found this brand just a few months ago, but I have gone through 2 complete tubes of lipstick. This brands formulas are very true. The matte is very matte, and the Silky (ultra) is very silky. The colors are also always come out EXACTLY how they look on the tube. I can just go in and pick a color and know exactly how it will look. And, they only run me 1.99! Click the photo to find these lipsticks. From what i've seen, they run much higher online then at my BSS!
Just an awkward black girl trying to put some RESPEK on my name. I'll be covering your anti-typical "I'm really cheap but I still want to look decent" fashion topics, and your " I only buy make-up less than 10$" beauty topics. As a business owner read about my entrepreneurial journey, and as a hopeless romantic, read about my struggles to find love . If you really real, share, comment and subscribe!
